Pothos: My Top Choice for Water Propagation Success
Pothos: My Top Choice for Water Propagation Success
If you are new to water propagation, pothos is one of the easiest and most rewarding plants to start with. Fast-growing, forgiving, and beautiful in almost any space, pothos has become one of our favorite plants for propagation at The Brass Butterfly.
Pothos root quickly in water and often starts showing new roots within just a couple of weeks. Their trailing vines and heart-shaped leaves also create beautiful living displays while they grow, especially when displayed in clear glass propagation vases where the roots remain visible.
To propagate pothos, simply snip a healthy vine just below a leaf node. Place the cutting in fresh water, making sure at least one node sits below the waterline. Set the vase in bright indirect light and refresh the water as needed.
One of the reasons pothos are so popular is their adaptability. They tolerate a wide range of indoor conditions and continue growing well even for beginners. Golden pothos, marble queen pothos, and neon pothos all root especially well in water.
Pothos also transition easily from water to soil once roots become established, making them an excellent choice for creating new houseplants to keep or share.
Clear glass propagation vases make it easy to monitor root growth while adding a simple botanical accent to windows, shelves, kitchens, and workspaces. Many people find the process of watching new roots develop surprisingly calming and rewarding.
While pothos are easy to grow, they still benefit from a few simple care tips:
-
Change the water regularly to keep it fresh
-
Avoid direct afternoon sun
-
Remove yellowing leaves promptly
-
Use clean scissors when taking cuttings
-
Keep the node below water, not the leaves
With minimal care, pothos can provide months of healthy growth and endless opportunities for propagation.
Whether you are just starting your first cutting or already filling your home with trailing vines, pothos remain one of the simplest and most reliable plants for successful water propagation.
